Kristians Rozenvalds has announced his resignation from the position of general secretary of the Latvian Badminton Federation (LBF). He admits that he can no longer sacrifice his time and unearned money.
Kristians Rozenvalds performed the duties of the General Secretary since July 2015. “During these seven years, so much has been done in badminton, but at the same time, unfortunately, so much remained undone,” he says, adding that the Covid-19 pandemic slowed down the breakthrough. “In March 2020, shortly before Covid-19, team tournaments in the format of the “Badminton 100″ relay, which was supposed to be one of the engines, were set in motion, as well as the equally important EHR University League. Badminton tournaments were already regularly broadcast on television in Latvia. The world-ranked badminton tournament Yonex Latvia International in Jelgava with its more than 300 participants from 40 countries was the biggest in Europe. But it was all stopped by Covid-19. I wouldn’t have the strength and energy for another such breakthrough.”
“When I took over the leadership of the Latvian Badminton Federation on July 17, 2015, there was a shortage in the treasury, and in media publications before the re-election of the leadership of the Latvian Olympic Committee, the Latvian Badminton Federation was mentioned as a negative example of dependence on state budget grants redistributed by the Latvian Olympic Committee. But already in 2018 state grants were 62.5%, but only 55.6% of the federation’s revenues in 2021. This is an indicator that many federations in Latvia can only dream of at the moment,” Rozenvalds was satisfied with this work.
He also mentions the fact that before Covid-19 the number of players almost doubled, new badminton centers and clubs were formed as successful works. “Badminton was visible, including in the media, in the state and public sphere. There were many public events, events, presentations, the annual award and others,” said Rozenvalds.
However, he is sorry that he did not manage to attract private investors to create at least one private badminton club where you can rent badminton courts at any time and day, as is the case in Lithuania, Estonia and almost all developed European countries.
“I have been talking about leaving since September 2019. I had hoped that someone would be found sooner who could and wanted to take over what had been started. However, at the same time, I could not “throw away” the previous Board, which had created such a centralized management model of the federation with me in mutual trust. If I had “dropped the seal” during the mandate of the previous Board, then I would have greatly disappointed the Chairman of the Board Mārtiņš Kažemaks and his deputy Gunārs Lūsveris, who were busy with their main work, who would then have to take on all the daily burdens. But with the election of the new Board, such changes could finally take place,” he pointed out.
Kristians Rozenvalds will return to work in public relations, but will continue to play badminton and referee tournaments.
